Teen Boot Camps for troubled teens are rarely supported by unbiased therapeutic or academic professionals, and those who DO suggest such programs are probably uneducated with regard to the harm that can come from them. It is rare that such a program will have a strong and reputable academic program, and even more rare that it will emphasize the psychological well-being of its students via a therapy-driven program.

Is this important? Consider this: The founder of InsightPros (Michael Behning) spent 8.5 years in the military. He is a supporter of the military in general. But he will be the FIRST to tell you that "Teen Boot Camps" for troubled youth are NOT true military boot camps. Moreover, approaching teens struggling with oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, or various other emotional or learning difficulties is precisely the OPPOSITE of what should be done to help these kids develop to a level in which they can maintain control of themselves.

We are NOT telling you to stop your research. In fact, we suggest that you fully research and scrutinize any residential program, whether or not it calls itself a boot camp, prior to placing your child into its care. There are great programs out there. If you need one you should be able to find one with proper research. Consult with a therapist and/or an educational consultant prior to making your final decision.

How are you going to know what your teen needs?

What kinds of intervention will build the life changing self-esteem and confidance that your child needs to be successful for the long run?

A major problem facing teenagers and youth today is low self-esteem or feelings of worthlessness.

Many, if not all, of your child's destructive behaviors could merely be symptoms of this one core problem.

Be certain that the intervention you choose builds, rather than destroys his/her self esteem, instilling life-long positive change by dealing with the core issues.

An abusive or overly restrictive setting may not build the confidence and self-esteem your child needs. Television and Hollywood have glamorized the idea of "sticking it to our kids" through brat camps or boot camps. Yet entertainment isn't treatment. There are better alternatives.

If your teenager exits a program with the same low self-image that he/she entered with, he/she will continue to engage in the behaviors that validate his/her self perception.

Many parents choose to pursue interventions that address the symptoms only. Attacking the symptoms will drive the destructive behaviors underground - only to resurface at a later date. This approach wastes valuable time and resources and may even make things worse.
